BIG MAX Dri Lite Hybrid Prime: A Buyer’s Guide

If you’ve been shopping for a bag that splits the difference between a stand bag you can carry for nine and a cart bag you can strap onto a push cart for eighteen, the BIG MAX Dri Lite Hybrid Prime is built squarely for that overlap. Here’s what you actually get.

    The Specs

    • Weight: 6.39 lb (≈2.9 kg)
    • Top: 9-inch, 14-way soft divider
    • Pockets: 7, including an extra-large cooler compartment and a waterproof value organizer
    • Material: Premium SoftGuard PU leather, water-resistant; fire-retardant coating; resists pen marks, dirt, and scratches
    • Strap system: Padded shoulder strap with detachable straps for cart use
    • Stand: Lowered legs with leg-lock system for push cart compatibility
    • Colors: Off-white, black, forest green
    • Price: $329
    • Warranty: 3 years with registration

    What’s Included

The bag ships with a rain hood, umbrella holder, glove holder, towel holder, and pencil holder. Nothing you’ll need to buy on top of it on day one.

How It Works as a Hybrid

The hybrid claim hinges on two design choices. First, the lowered stand legs and leg-lock keep the stand from interfering when the bag is mounted to a push cart — a common gripe with stand bags pressed into cart duty. Second, the shoulder straps detach completely, so you’re not carrying loose hardware around when you’re riding or pushing.

The 14-way top is on the higher end for a bag in this weight class. Each club gets its own slot, which most carry bags sacrifice to save weight.

Where It Fits in Your Round

The Dri Lite Hybrid Prime is aimed at golfers who switch modes — carry one day, push cart the next, an occasional ride along with a friend’s group. The 6.39 lb weight is heavier than a pure carry bag (most sit between 4 and 5.5 lb) but lighter than a dedicated cart bag (typically 7–10 lb). That’s the trade-off the “hybrid” label is buying you.

The cooler pocket is genuinely cooler-sized, not the tiny insulated sleeve some brands market as one. The waterproof value organizer is a separate compartment for phone, wallet, and watch — useful in wet conditions even though the bag overall is water-resistant rather than fully waterproof.

    Bottom Line

At $329, the Dri Lite Hybrid Prime sits in the mid-premium range for hybrid bags. You’re paying for the 14-way top, the SoftGuard PU material, and the cart-friendly stand design. If you carry every round, a lighter dedicated stand bag will serve you better. If you ride every round, a full cart bag will give you more pocket volume. For the middle path, this is a clean option.

  • Bushnell Tour V7 Shift review: This Rangefinder Puts Slope Where it Belongs

Bushnell Tour V7 Shift review: This Rangefinder Puts Slope Where it Belongs

I’m standing on a par 3 with about 165 yards to a pin cut tight behind a bunker. The flag sits maybe fifteen feet above my feet. I know the number is 165. What I don’t know, not instinctively, is what that elevation is doing to the real distance. That half-second of math, that moment of second-guessing the club in my hands, is exactly what Bushnell built the Tour V7 Shift to eliminate.

    Slope First, Everything Else Cecond

Previous Bushnell rangefinders gave you the straight-line number up front and the slope-adjusted number as a secondary read. The Tour V7 Shift flips that. The compensated distance shows first, displayed in green on a new dual-color OLED, right in your line of sight. Bushnell calls it Slope First Technology, and the logic is hard to argue with: if 98% of PGA Tour pros are already using Bushnell (per the 2026 Darrell Survey at THE PLAYERS, 121 out of 123 players surveyed), and every serious amateur is already anchoring club selection on the slope-adjusted number, why not lead with it?

It sounds like a small change, but it isn’t. When the first number you see is the one you’re actually going to play, there’s less friction between reading and deciding. The green number becomes the anchor. You trust it, pick the club, and go.

    The Dual-Color OLED Display

    bushnell tour v7 shift rangefinder

The dual-color OLED is Bushnell’s first on a rangefinder and a noticeable step up from the LCD screens in previous Tour V models. Bright enough to read in full sun, clear enough that you’re not squinting through the eyepiece parsing digits. The slope-adjusted yardage glows green while the line-of-sight distance shows in red, giving you both numbers without clutter. It’s the kind of improvement that feels obvious in hindsight, which usually means it was harder to engineer than it looks.

What Else is in The Box

The V7 Shift ranges flags at 500+ yards with 6x magnification and plus-or-minus 1-yard accuracy out to 1,300 yards. In other reviews, it’s been called the fastest Bushnell rangefinder to date, with yardages displaying the instant you release the button. In my testing I can confirm these findings. Bushnell generally have always made the fastest rangefinders. PinSeeker with Visual JOLT locks the flag and gives you both a vibration and a flashing red ring for confirmation. The integrated BITE magnetic mount snaps onto a cart bar without a separate accessory. IPX6 weather resistance is another nice touch and help protect your investment should you get caught in a shower. CR2 battery included. Two-year warranty.

Have you ever shot a yardage, started talking to your friends and immediately forgot that yardage? Yeah, happens to me all the time. Yardage Range Recall lets you pull up the last ranged distance with a press of the mode button. Useful on the range when dialing in carry numbers, or on the course when you fire a yardage, pocket the unit, then want to double-check before pulling the trigger. Or are easily distracted and forgetful, like me.

The V7 Shift is also Link-Enabled, pairing with the Bushnell Golf app and Foresight Sports launch monitor data for personalized MyBag “play as” distances and club recommendations. Previously, that feature was exclusive to the Pro X3+ at $599.99. Now it’s here at $399.99, which makes this the most interesting value in Bushnell’s lineup for golfers who already track their numbers.

And yes, it’s tournament legal. The Slope-Switch on the side of the unit toggles slope compensation off with a physical switch, making the V7 Shift fully USGA-conforming for competitive play. No menus, no software. Flip the switch and you’re legal.

Is it worth the upgrade from the V6?

If you’re coming from a Tour V6 Shift, the jump is real but not radical. The V6 used a single-color LCD. The V7’s dual-color OLED with Slope First is a different experience in the eyepiece, particularly in bright or low light. Add Yardage Range Recall and Link-Enabled club recommendations (neither existed on the V6), and the upgrade starts to make sense, especially since Bushnell held the price at $399.99.

If your V6 still works and you don’t use a launch monitor, you can wait. But if you’re shopping fresh or you own a Foresight or Bushnell Launch Pro, the V7 Shift is the clear pick at this price.

    The Real Question

Does it make you more confident standing over the ball? After spending time with it, I think the answer is yes, and the reason is simpler than the spec sheet suggests. Slope first means one less decision to process. One fewer moment of doubt. That’s worth more than any feature list.

The Bushnell Tour V7 Shift is available now at select golf retailers and at BushnellGolf.com for $399.99.

    Bushnell Tour V7 Shift FAQ

Is the Bushnell Tour V7 Shift tournament legal? Yes. The Slope-Switch on the side of the unit disables slope compensation with a physical toggle, making it fully USGA-conforming for competitive play.

What is Slope First Technology? Slope First displays the elevation-compensated “play as” distance in green before the straight-line distance. Previous Bushnell models showed the line-of-sight number first. The V7 Shift leads with the number most golfers actually use for club selection.

How much does the Bushnell Tour V7 Shift cost? The Tour V7 Shift retails for $399.99, the same price as the outgoing V6 Shift. It’s $200 less than the flagship Pro X3+ LINK at $599.99.

What does Link-Enabled mean on the Tour V7 Shift? Link-Enabled pairs the rangefinder with the Bushnell Golf app and Foresight Sports launch monitor data. If you’ve mapped your bag with a compatible launch monitor, the V7 Shift displays personalized club recommendations in the viewfinder based on your actual carry distances.

Does the Bushnell Tour V7 Shift have an OLED display? Yes. It’s Bushnell’s first dual-color OLED on a rangefinder. The slope-adjusted distance appears in green and the line-of-sight distance in red, readable in all lighting conditions.

  • L.A.B. Golf’s Blade Finally Looks Like a Blade

L.A.B. Golf’s Blade Finally Looks Like a Blade

If you’ve spent any time around serious putters in the last few years, you’ve probably heard someone mention L.A.B. Golf. The Oregon-based company has been winning over skeptics with their Lie Angle Balance technology — engineering putters so the shaft has zero torque at address, meaning the face stays put rather than wanting to rotate. The science is legit. The problem, for a lot of golfers, was always the look.

L.A.B. went down the blade road before with the LINK.1 back in late 2022, but that model used a center shaft rather than a traditional heel shaft – the technical requirement that made LAB’s balancing act work in the first place. It looked like a blade if you squinted, but the center shaft placement was still enough to make traditionalists uneasy.

That’s what makes the LINK.2.1 and LINK.2.2 a meaningful step forward. These two models have evolved from the original LINK.1 with the addition of LAB’s heel-shaft technology – something made possible by a lightweight aluminum riser hosel that connects the shaft near the heel while still keeping the head’s balance point where LAB needs it. L.A.B. had actually introduced its first non-center-shafted design the previous summer with the OZ.1i HS, so this isn’t magic – It’s that same riser technology now transplanted into a blade shape.

The result is two putters that pass the glance test. The 2.1 is a narrow blade for purists, the 2.2 is a square-back with a slightly wider profile. Both are 100% CNC milled 303 stainless steel with a black PVD finish. They look like something a Tour player would actually put in the bag without explanation.

Mallets versus blades has been a hot topic this season, with just five of the world’s top 25 players still using a blade, so the timing of a blade that actually looks conventional is smart. If you’ve been curious about LAB’s technology but couldn’t get past the visual, the barrier just got a lot lower.

Stock runs $499, custom starts at $599. Available now at labgolf.com and in stores from April 23.

  • Lowry’s Crushing Bear Trap Collapse Gifts Echavarria the Cognizant Classic

Lowry’s Crushing Bear Trap Collapse Gifts Echavarria the Cognizant Classic

There’s a particular cruelty to the Bear Trap at PGA National, the way it lies in wait through 69 holes of golf, patient as a predator. Shane Lowry knew this. He’d felt its bite before. Yet standing on the 16th tee Sunday afternoon with a three-shot lead and victory within reach, the Irishman somehow convinced himself the danger had passed.

It hadn’t. And in two swings—two wild, inexplicable misses into the water—Lowry’s tournament dissolved into the Florida breeze, handing Nico Echavarria a third PGA Tour victory that arrived more by inheritance than conquest.

    When the Dam Breaks

    Embed from Getty Images

The collapse was swift and complete. Lowry had charged through the front nine with five birdies, then added an eagle at the par-5 10th that stretched his advantage to three shots. The tournament felt decided. His caddie was already thinking about celebration dinners. His four-year-old daughter was waiting by the 18th green, ginger curls catching the afternoon sun.

Then came the 16th hole, where Lowry’s tee shot sailed way right and barely cleared dry land before finding water. The first crack in the dam. Double bogey. Lead down to one.

On the 17th tee, with the Bear Trap’s most notorious bite awaiting, Lowry did it again. Another wild miss, another splash, another double bogey. The lead was gone, evaporated in the humid Florida air like morning dew. Just before him Echavarria made an improbably birdie and emphasized it with a huge fist pump. You have to wonder if that was in Lowry’s mind.

“I just couldn’t feel the clubface the last three holes after my tee shot on 16,” Lowry said afterward, his voice carrying the weight of what might have been. “It was strange.”

    The Heart of It

The statistics tell one story—consecutive double bogeys on holes 16 and 17, a final-round 71 when 69 would have won. But the real story lives in Lowry’s words afterward, raw and unfiltered in a way that reminded anyone listening why we fall in love with this impossible game.

“The hardest thing about today is I’ve never won in front of my four-year-old, and she was waiting for me,” Lowry said, the emotion evident in every syllable. “I only wanted it for her today. I didn’t want it for—I don’t care about anything else. I wanted it so bad. Just to see her little ginger hair running down the 18th green would have been the most special thing in the world. I thought I had it. I thought I was going to win.”

This is what separates golf from other pursuits—the way it can reduce a man to his most essential self, stripping away pretense until only truth remains. Lowry faced every question from the media afterward, a stark contrast to his silence after a similar late fade at the 2025 Truist Championship in Philadelphia.

    The Beneficiary

    Embed from Getty Images

While Lowry was unraveling behind him, Echavarria was methodically putting together a bogey-free 66 in the group ahead. The Colombian didn’t even know the door was opening until his caddie mentioned it walking off the 17th green.

Ironically, it was Echavarria’s own brush with disaster on 17—a pushed tee shot that flirted with the water—that created the decisive moment. The ball settled below the hole, and he drained the birdie putt that would prove to be the winning shot.

“To be honest, I didn’t think it was going to be possible with a three-shot lead that he had,” Echavarria said. “But the Bear Trap played harder today than any of the other three days. It was playing into the wind.”

The victory capped a remarkable weekend for Echavarria, who had closed on a new home nearby on Friday and welcomed a Bernedoodle into his family. Sometimes golf’s timing aligns with life in the most perfectly improbable ways—just not always for the player you expect.

    A Familiar Ache

For Lowry, this was the latest chapter in a particularly painful relationship with PGA National. Four consecutive top-11 finishes at this venue, including three straight top-fives, yet no victory to show for it. In 2022, he reached the 72nd hole needing birdie for a playoff when a sudden squall swept through South Florida, leaving him one shot short.

“I’m obviously extremely disappointed,” Lowry said. “I had the tournament in my hands and I threw it away. What more can I say? That’s twice so far this year. I’m getting good at it.”

The reference was to an earlier stumble at the Dubai Invitational, where another late mistake cost him dearly. It’s a pattern that would frustrate a lesser competitor, but Lowry’s willingness to face the questions, to acknowledge the pain, shows a man still fighting rather than one ready to surrender.

“Golf does strange things to you at times,” he concluded, “and it certainly did it to me today.”

Indeed it does. Sometimes those strange things involve watching certain victory slip away in two swings. And sometimes, if you’re Nico Echavarria, they involve being handed an unexpected gift just when you least expect it.

    Normandy, France

    One More Bucket List Item

The golf at Omaha Beach Golf Club was almost beside the point. I’ve been a student of World War II history since I was old enough to learn about it, and returning to France and visiting the D-Day sites in Normandy was something I had carried on my list for decades. Standing on those beaches — Omaha, Juno, Pointe du Hoc — and walking through the American Cemetery above the bluffs, you feel the weight of what happened there in a way that no book or documentary can prepare you for. These were ordinary young men and women who did something extraordinary. Paying my respects in person was the right way to close out a 31-day trip that had already given me more than I could have asked for. Bucket list: checked.

  • The Putter That Won’t Twist: Inside LAB Golf

The Putter That Won’t Twist: Inside LAB Golf

    The Moment Everything Changed

In 2014, in a garage in Reno, Nevada, a man named Bill Presse pulled the grip off a putter. It wasn’t a dramatic act. He was tinkering, the way people who build things tend to do when something nags at them. But when that grip came off and he held the bare shaft at lie angle, the angle you’d actually use over a putt, the face flopped open. Just fell right over.

This was supposed to be a face-balanced putter. The industry said so. Hold it up, balance the shaft on your finger, and sure enough, the face points at the sky. Balanced. Except Presse wasn’t putting with the shaft horizontal. Nobody is. You stand over the ball with the shaft tilted, and at that angle, gravity has other plans for the clubface. There’s torque. There’s twist. There has always been twist.

What Presse did next tells you everything. He didn’t write a white paper. He didn’t pitch investors. He grabbed a broken crutch, cut it apart, and built a prototype he called the Revealer. It was ugly. It worked. And it started a company that would eventually make the entire putter industry nervous. The Revealer holds a putter without the user touching it and shows how it twists during a stroke if not properly balanced. This tool highlighted the impact of torque on the putting stroke and inspired the development of the Lie Angle Balance technology which is the company’s hallmark.

    A Bar Owner From Eugene

Presse founded Directed Force in 2015 and started selling putters built around his discovery. The company struggled. Great ideas don’t always come packaged with great business plans, and Presse was an inventor first. The putters were good, but the path from a garage in Reno to the golf mainstream is long and poorly marked.

Sam Hahn was an unlikely savior. A bar owner and musician from Eugene, Oregon, not the profile you’d expect for a future golf equipment CEO. Hahn found a Directed Force putter online, tried it, and felt what thousands of players have felt since: that unsettling moment when something you’ve been doing your whole life suddenly gets easier, and you realize you’d been fighting your equipment without knowing it.

In 2018, Hahn, his brother, and his father bought out the investors and rebranded the company as L.A.B. Golf. The name is almost bluntly literal: Lie. Angle. Balance. No clever acronym. No marketing committee. Just a description of what the putter does, as if daring you to judge it on that alone.

    What the Putter Actually Does

The concept is simpler than the industry wants you to think. A L.A.B. putter produces zero torque when you hold it at lie angle. Pick it up, address the ball, and let go of the grip with one hand. The face stays square. It doesn’t twist. It just sits there, pointing where you aimed it.

Every other putter on the market has some degree of torque at lie angle. The face wants to open or close, and your hands have to manage that tendency throughout the stroke. You’ve been doing it so long you don’t notice. It’s like breathing through a slightly blocked nostril. You adapt. You compensate. You don’t realize how much effort you’re spending on a problem that could simply not exist.

For players who use a square-to-square stroke, keeping the face aimed at the target throughout rather than opening and closing it, the difference is immediate. The putter does what your hands are already trying to do. You stop fighting. You start rolling the ball on your line. The mechanics don’t change. The interference just disappears. Just hold the putter loosely and let it swing.

That said, this isn’t for everyone, and the company would probably admit that. Players with an arcing stroke, the kind of motion that naturally opens and closes the face, may not feel the same benefit. Some fitters will tell you that torque isn’t inherently bad, that a well-fit conventional putter matched to your stroke can perform just as well. And they’re not wrong. Putting is deeply personal. What L.A.B. did was identify a variable nobody was talking about and eliminate it. Whether that variable matters to you depends on how you move the putter.

    From Garage to Oakmont

Adam Scott was one of the first tour players to take notice. He gamed a DF2.1 at the 2019 Masters, and the golf world paid a certain kind of attention, the kind where people say “interesting” and keep watching. Then in 2020, Peter Finch and Rick Shiels reviewed L.A.B. putters on YouTube, and the business tripled overnight. Not over a quarter. Overnight.

That’s the strange math of modern golf equipment. A well-struck seven iron doesn’t care about social media, but the people buying the clubs absolutely do. Those YouTube reviews did what years of grassroots demo days couldn’t. They put the putter in front of millions of eyes, and enough of those eyes belonged to people who’d been searching for something they couldn’t name.

Today, tour players across the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and other professional circuits game L.A.B. putters. Not one of them is paid to do so. Zero endorsement deals. They play the putter because it works, and they keep playing it because nothing else feels the same once you’ve made the switch.

Then came Oakmont. The 2025 U.S. Open, final round, 18th green. JJ Spaun stood 64 feet from the hole with a one-shot lead and a DF3 in his hands. Oakmont’s greens are among the fastest and most terrifying surfaces in championship golf. Sixty-four feet across that glass, with a national title hanging on it. He committed to the line, made the stroke, and the ball tracked the full length of the green and dropped. Walk-off birdie. The broadcast booth went silent for a full beat before the call caught up to what had just happened. If L.A.B. Golf needed a moment that made people stop scrolling, that was it.

The numbers since 2018 are almost hard to believe. Eighteen thousand percent growth. From four employees to 225. From a rebranded garage startup to the putter company that the entire industry is watching.

Steel Inserts and the Current Lineup

The newest chapter in the L.A.B. story is steel. The OZ.1i, their collaboration with Adam Scott, has a steel insert face and offers a 0-degree shaft lean option that Scott himself helped develop. It’s a mallet with presence on the green, and the steel insert gives it a feel that’s firmer, more connected. You hear the ball leave the face differently. There’s feedback there that the original aluminum face and other putters’ polymer inserts can’t quite deliver.

The OZ.1i HS might be the release that matters most for growing the brand. It’s their first heel-shafted model. If you’ve ever looked at a L.A.B. putter and thought “I love the tech but I can’t get past the shaft position,” this is the answer. Traditional setup. Classic sight lines. Same zero torque. It looks like any other premium mallet until you pick it up and feel it refuse to twist in your hands.

The DF3i, released in February 2026, is the latest refinement of their original Directed Force shape. Firmer feel from the steel insert, 2% faster ball speed than the previous model. For players who prefer the DF’s more compact profile over the OZ mallet, it’s the best version they’ve made. The MEZZ.1 MAX and the LINK.1 blade fill out the range with mid-mallet and blade options. The full lineup runs $499 to $599 for stock offerings, but customization with upgraded shafts and lengths can add another $500, which isn’t cheap, but feels honest for what you’re getting. After all, the putter is the most used club in your bag. Save some coin on that $600 driver and invest in the club that will impact your score the most.

Fanboy Status: 10 Putters and Counting

    lab golf putters oz.1i mezz

I should be upfront about something, because you’ve probably already picked up on it: I’m a fanboy. I’ve owned ten L.A.B. putters. I currently have five of them. An OZ.1i Sweeper for when I get desperate, a 38-inch counterbalanced OZ.1i that I built for a specific purpose and can’t bring myself to sell, Two OZ.1i HS models, because when the “blackout” special edition face and screws were released, I couldn’t resist. Finally, a nearly 4 year old MEZZ Max, which feels like forever ago at this point. That’s not rational consumer behavior. I know that.

I came to L.A.B. in the earlier days, before the YouTube explosion, before JJ Spaun, before most people had heard the name. I try to putt with a square-to-square stroke, and the first time I set up over a L.A.B. DF2.1, I felt what Presse must have felt in that garage. Not a revelation, exactly. More like recognition. Like the putter was doing what I’d been trying to force every other putter to do for twenty years. It probably helps that I’ve always had an affinity for “ugly” putters.

For those that prefer a traditional look, that’s what’s tough about these putters. They look strange. The early models especially. You set one down behind the ball and your playing partners stare at it like you pulled a kitchen utensil out of your bag. The shaft position on the center-shafted models takes getting used to, visually and mechanically. I’ve had friends try mine, make six putts in a row, and still say “I just can’t get past how it looks.” That’s real, and I’m sure it’s cost L.A.B. some sales over the years. The OZ.1i HS exists specifically because the company heard that objection enough times to do something about it without deviating from their core mission of making Lie Angle Balanced putters.

What keeps me in the ecosystem, beyond the performance, is the community. The “LAB Rats” Facebook group has over 37,000 members, and it has an energy I haven’t seen anywhere else in golf equipment circles. People share setups, contemplate grip changes, debate shaft lengths, and post their rounds with the earnestness of hobbyists who genuinely love what they’ve found. Sam Hahn himself is in there regularly, responding to questions, taking feedback, occasionally getting roasted for shipping delays. It still feels like a mom-and-pop operation, even as the company has scaled beyond anything its founders probably imagined.

    What Comes Next

In July 2025, L Catterton, the private equity firm backed by LVMH, acquired a majority stake in L.A.B. Golf. The valuation reportedly exceeded $200 million. That makes it perhaps the largest putter acquisition since Callaway bought Odyssey in 1997.

The Odyssey comparison is worth mentioning, because when Callaway acquired them Odyssey was a niche innovator with a cult following built on the 2-Ball and the Rossie. Under Callaway, they got global distribution, tour staff deals, and shelf space in every pro shop on the planet. They also became, gradually, a corporate putter brand. The quirky identity softened. The product line ballooned. They’re still the most-played putter on the PGA Tour most weeks, but nobody talks about Odyssey the way they talk about L.A.B. Nobody posts in an Odyssey Facebook group about how a mallet changed their relationship with the game.

That’s the tension. The management team stays, and that was a condition of the deal. Sam Hahn and the people who built the culture remain in place. L Catterton brings international distribution, retail partnerships, and R&D capital. On paper, the soul stays and the resources multiply. But private equity doesn’t acquire companies at nine-figure valuations to leave them alone. There will be pressure to grow faster, expand the line, chase market share. The question is whether L.A.B. can do that without becoming the thing it defined itself against.

I keep thinking about Bill Presse in that garage, pulling the grip off a putter because something didn’t feel right. I think about Sam Hahn finding a weird putter online and convincing his family to go all in. Those are small, human moments you don’t often hear about with other brands’ origin stories.

I have nine putters that say the idea at the center of this company is strong enough to outlast the growing pains. Some things, once you feel them, you can’t unfeel. The face stays square. You stop fighting. And you roll the ball where you’re looking.

  • TaylorMade’s 2026 TP5 and TP5x Promise More Consistency Through Microcoating Tech

TaylorMade’s 2026 TP5 and TP5x Promise More Consistency Through Microcoating Tech

TaylorMade has rolled out its 2026 TP5 and TP5x golf balls, and while the annual ball refresh can sometimes feel like tinkering at the margins, there’s an interesting manufacturing story here worth paying attention to.

The headline innovation is what TaylorMade calls microcoating—a reimagined paint application process that addresses something you’ve probably never thought about: how paint pools unevenly in dimples on traditional golf balls. The company’s solution involves precision control of cure times, temperatures, and paint atomization measured down to one-millionth of a gram, according to the launch details.

What does that actually mean for your game? TaylorMade claims the ultrathin, consistent coating delivers optimized dimple peak height, tighter dispersion left-to-right, and better performance in wind. Translation: more predictable ball flight when conditions aren’t ideal.

What’s Different Between the Two Models

The TP5 remains the speed-focused option in the lineup. This year’s version features TaylorMade’s largest Tour core yet, which reduces contact time with the clubface and increases energy retention. They’ve also reworked the Tour Flight Dimple Pattern to minimize turbulence, producing a lower, more penetrating ball flight—useful if you’re fighting a ballooning trajectory or playing in firm conditions.

The TP5x, meanwhile, stays true to its five-layer construction with an emphasis on ball speed and low spin off the driver. New mantle layer materials and a firmer composition throughout the speed gradient are designed to maximize distance, while the ultrathin cast urethane cover still provides the wedge spin control you’d expect from a Tour ball.

    Options and Pricing

Both models are available in white, yellow, pix, and Stripe editions, plus officially licensed NFL designs for those who like a little team pride on the tee box. The Stripe version now features a 360° Tour ClearPath Alignment system with a performance dot for better visual feedback on the greens.

Pricing comes in at $58 per dozen. Pre-orders are open now, with a full retail launch set for February 12.

    Tour Validation

Worth noting: Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa have already made the switch to the 2026 TP5. When players of that caliber change equipment mid-season preparation, it’s usually a signal that the performance gains are real, not just marketing.

Whether microcoating technology translates to noticeable improvements in your bag is something only time—and rounds—will tell. But if you’ve been happy with the TP5 or TP5x platform and want the latest iteration, the refinements seem focused on consistency rather than reinventing the wheel. And in golf, consistency is everything.

  • Bushnell’s New Wingman HD: Golf GPS Meets Premium Sound System

Bushnell’s New Wingman HD: Golf GPS Meets Premium Sound System

If you’ve ever wished your golf speaker could do more than just play music, Bushnell Golf just answered that prayer. Their latest release, the Wingman HD, takes the GPS speaker concept to a whole new level with a vibrant touchscreen display and audio quality that’ll make you forget you’re on the course and not at a backyard concert.

What Makes the Wingman HD Different?

The standout feature here is the 3.5-inch color touchscreen that shows you everything you need at a glance: distances to the front, center, and back of the green, plus up to six hazards per hole displayed right on screen. No more squinting at your phone or trying to remember yardages while you’re lining up your shot.

But Bushnell didn’t forget that this is still, at its core, a speaker. The device packs dual 15-watt speakers with passive radiators that deliver 360-degree sound. According to Alfredo Marquez, GPS Product Manager at Bushnell Golf, “Wingman HD is built for golfers who want to stay dialed in on every shot and keep vibes up from the first tee to the final putt.”

Smart Features That Actually Make Sense

One clever addition is the dynamic audio adjustment feature. As your cart speeds up, the volume automatically compensates so your music doesn’t fade into the background. It’s controlled through the Bushnell Golf Mobile App, which also unlocks additional features like GreenView for detailed green contours, a shot distance calculator, and on-device scoring.

For those who like to personalize their experience, the Wingman HD lets you set up custom first-tee intros and personal soundbites. And if you’re playing in a tournament or large group event, you can pair up to 100 units together for what Bushnell calls “Concert Links” mode, creating synchronized sound across the entire course. I can see the anti-music-on-course purists shaking their heads – Sorry, but the game is changing!

    Built for Real Golf Conditions

The device earned an IPX67 rating, meaning it can handle dust, rain, and whatever else the course throws at it. Bushnell also included their BITE magnetic mount, which secures the speaker directly to your cart’s metal bar without any fuss. There’s even an indoor and outdoor EQ mode for when you’re at the range, using a simulator, or just practicing in the backyard.

    Wingman HD Key Features

    • 3.5” Color HD Touchscreen for visual distances, hazards, GreenView, and HoleView
    • Premium Audio with 2 x 15-watt speakers + passive radiators for powerful, for clear and immersive sound
    • Bi-directional Speaker Design for immersive 360° audio
    • Dynamic Audio Adjustment: Controlled in the app; the volume compensates as speed of cart increases.
    • Audible & Visual GPS: front/center/back distances, hazards, shot distance calculator
    • Custom Audio Features: 1st tee intros, personal messages, and custom soundbites
    • “Concert Links” pairing: connect up to 100 Wingman HD units for concert-like sound
    • Integrated BITE Magnetic Cart Mount: secure directly on the cart bar
    • On device scoring (Connected to the App)
    • Indoor/Outdoor EQ mode for range, simulator, or backyard sessions
    • Rated IPX67 Dustproof & Waterproof

    The Bottom Line

At $199.99, the Wingman HD positions itself as a premium option in the GPS speaker category. It launches in mid-October through select golf retailers and directly from BushnellGolf.com.

For golfers who want their course technology to handle both the technical and entertainment sides of the game without carrying multiple devices, the Wingman HD delivers on both fronts. It’s not just about adding a screen to a speaker; it’s about creating a single device that genuinely enhances how you experience a round of golf.

  • JJ Spaun Leans on LAB in US Open Victory at Oakmont

JJ Spaun Leans on LAB in US Open Victory at Oakmont

JJ Spaun tosses his LAB Golf DF3 putter after US Open winning putt

JJ Spaun started Father’s Day with a 3am run to the pharmacy because his daughter was sick. He finished the day as the 2025 US Open champion on Oakmont’s legendary and treacherous greens. He was four shots back at the turn on Sunday, partly because of a horrendous break on the second hole when his wedge shot struck the flag and spun back off the green and down the fairway.

He battled bad lies, bad weather, major pressure and a 40 on the front nine, but somehow kept his composure through it all. Over the final seven holes, Spaun made more than 136 feet of putts, including a curling 64-footer on the 72nd hole (the longest putt of the week by anyone in the field) to seal his first major. When it was all said and done, he was the only player to finish the U.S. Open under par.

While the world watched, his L.A.B. Golf DF3 putter stayed square through nerves, bad breaks, and brutal conditions. After the win, he said he never knew what his ceiling was. The truth is, most golfers don’t. But when you stop fighting your putter, the ceiling goes higher.

  • 2025 U.S. Open Preview: Oakmont’s Historic Challenge

    2025 U.S. Open Preview: Oakmont’s Historic Challenge

Golf’s third major championship of 2025 returns to one of America’s most storied venues this week, as Oakmont Country Club hosts a record tenth U.S. Open beginning Thursday, June 12. The 156-player field will tackle the legendary Pennsylvania layout that has challenged the world’s best golfers for over a century.

    The Venue: Oakmont’s Enduring Legacy

Oakmont Country Club, established in 1903, is regarded as the “oldest top-ranked golf course in the United States” and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987. The course’s unique design features the Pennsylvania Turnpike separating seven holes from the rest of the layout, but that doesn’t take away from a distinctive championship test.

As one of three U.S. Open “anchor sites,” Oakmont—which last hosted the major championship in 2016—is set to host three more times through 2049. This designation speaks to the course’s enduring appeal and its proven ability to identify worthy champions.

Course Conditions: A Softer Challenge This Year

The 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont promises to play differently than its notorious 2016 edition. During the 2016 U.S. Open, Oakmont Country Club played incredibly tough. Only four players finished under par, and the winning score of 4-under demonstrated the course’s brutal difficulty when conditions are firm and fast.

However, recent weather patterns have created different conditions for this year’s championship. The wet conditions leading up to tournament week have softened the traditionally rock-hard greens and fairways, potentially creating more scoring opportunities than Oakmont typically allows.

Weather Forecast: Storm Clouds on the Horizon

Golf’s third major championship of the year might have to dodge showers and storms this weekend. The weather forecast presents a mixed bag for players and spectators alike.

Tournament officials and players are monitoring conditions closely, as weather could play a significant role in determining the championship outcome. The possibility of rain delays and changing conditions adds another layer of complexity to an already challenging venue.

    Players to Watch: Championship Contenders

The field is loaded with world-class talent, headlined by several marquee names who have been identified as top contenders:

    The Favorites

Scottie Scheffler enters as the betting favorite, continuing his dominant form from earlier in the season. Sports coverage has highlighted Scheffler as one of the main players to challenge at the 2025 US Open at Oakmont, and his recent major championship success makes him a natural choice to contend.

Bryson DeChambeau returns to Oakmont with his power game and analytical approach to course management. DeChambeau has been specifically mentioned among the players who could challenge at the 2025 US Open at Oakmont. His length off the tee could prove advantageous on Oakmont’s lengthy layout.

Rory McIlroy remains in the conversation despite recent struggles. Questions persist about how far McIlroy has fallen amid his recent struggles, but his talent and major championship experience make him a perennial threat at venues like Oakmont.

    Dark Horse Candidates

Expert analysis has identified longshot picks at 100-1 odds to challenge the favorites, suggesting there could be value in players outside the top tier of betting favorites. These longer shots often thrive in U.S. Open conditions where course management and mental toughness can overcome pure talent.

The complete field features rising stars, seasoned veterans, and international players all vying for golf’s most coveted prize. With 156 players in the field, the depth of talent ensures compelling storylines throughout the four-day championship.

    Championship Implications

This year’s U.S. Open carries special significance as the third major of the season, coming at a crucial point in the professional golf calendar. Players are not only competing for the championship trophy but also for valuable world ranking points, FedEx Cup standings, and momentum heading into the season’s final major.

The tournament’s outcome could significantly impact the Player of the Year race and set the stage for autumn’s biggest events. For many players, a strong showing at Oakmont could be the catalyst for a breakthrough season or a return to form.

    What to Expect

Oakmont Country Club has a reputation for identifying worthy champions who can handle pressure, execute under difficult conditions, and navigate one of golf’s most demanding tests. Whether the course plays softer due to recent weather or returns to its traditional firm and fast conditions, players will need to bring their best golf to contend.

The combination of historical significance, world-class talent, and unpredictable weather conditions sets the stage for what promises to be a memorable championship. As the 125th U.S. Open unfolds, golf fans can expect the drama and excitement that only major championship golf can provide.

The tournament begins Thursday, June 12, with the championship scheduled to conclude on Sunday, June 15. All eyes will be on Oakmont Country Club as the world’s best golfers compete for one of the sport’s most prestigious titles.

  • Affordable Golf Rangefinder with Premium Features: Bushnell A-1 Slope

Affordable Golf Rangefinder with Premium Features: Bushnell A-1 Slope

My biggest gripe with most laser rangefinders is the battery. You never knew when the 9v or CR2 battery would die, and inevitably it would go out in the middle of a tournament round or something and I’d have to find a place to buy a new one. Bushnell has fixed that issue with their new A-1 Slope rangefinder, because it has a built-in rechargeable battery. They are claiming 50+ rounds of golf between charges, which is plenty for any golf rangefinder, but with most golf carts having USB ports these days and some golf bags even having pockets for batteries to charge your devices, you don’t have to worry about the battery dying on you mid-round. Just plug it in the night before your important tournament and you’ll be good to go.

The other feature I love is the magnet, which on the A-1 Slope rangefinder comes in the form of a silicone sleeve, which gives you the option to use the magnetic mount, or remove it from the protective skin and simply keep it on your pocket or golf cart cup holder. You can do this because this golf rangefinder is tiny! I’m not a minimalist or anything, but I do appreciate light weight and compact size, especially when traveling abroad and overweight luggage fees hit hard.

Bushnell is well aware that their products aren’t the cheapest, but when it comes to technology and quality, those cheap golf rangefinders from Amazon just can’t compete. If you are looking for a less expensive rangefinder option, give the Bushnell A-1 Slope a try. At a price point of $299 it makes a great gift because it’s budget friendly without sacrificing quality and has the premium features you expect from the market leader in golf rangefinders.

    A1-SLOPE GOLF RANGEFINDER FEATURES:

    • A1-Slope Laser Rangefinder
    • BITE Magnetic Skin
    • USB-C Charging Cord
    • Premium Carrying Case
    • Washable Micro-Fiber Cloth
    • Quick Start Guide

The new QuadMAX, built on the same advanced four-camera photometric data capture technology, packs even more features into a compact, ruggedized form factor. At $20,000 it’s not likely to be an impulse purchase for most people, but if you want the best, sell one of your kidneys or tap into the kids’ college fund and get the Foresight QuadMAX. Payne Stewart Collection

If you were born in the 90s and beyond, there’s a good chance you don’t know who Payne Stewart is. However, any golfer born in the 70s and 80s (like your dad) will know the name. Stewart was one of my favorite golfers ever, and his untimely death in 1999 rocked the golf world. Visitors to Pinehurst Resort cannot miss the statue erected in his honor, depicting the iconic fist-pumping scene of his 1999 US Open victory with a clutch par putt on the 72nd hole to beat a young Phil Mickelson. Payne Stewart holds a special place in my heart as a player and a gentleman, and I’ll always cherish our brief interaction in 1998 at TPC Sawgrass.

The 25th anniversary of Payne Stewart’s unforgettable victory at the 1999 U.S. Open at Pinehurst Resort will be commemorated this week when Pinehurst No. 2 course again plays host to our national championship. Stewart’s fashion made him one of the most identifiable players on the PGA Tour and, fittingly, his legacy will again take center stage with the official launch of the Payne Stewart Collection.

The men’s luxury clothing line will honor the indelible style and grace of one of the game’s most revered figures, whose life was tragically cut short in a plane crash four months after his dramatic victory at Pinehurst. Dubbed the “All-Time Best Dressed Golfer,” Stewart’s influence went beyond his sporting achievements. His personality, charisma, and class left an enduring mark on the world of golf and fashion, now immortalized in a selection of clothing and accessories that capture his iconic look. Bushnell Wingman View

Bushnell’s updated Wingman Bluetooth speaker now includes an LCD screen to quickly get GPS yardages for over 30,000 courses, built right in to the speaker. It still sounds great and has enough battery to last for 36 holes, and can even help charge other devices in a pinch.

    Pinehurst Resort

It may be a bit too late for a Father’s Day weekend golf trip, but there’s never a bad time to book the popular Donald Ross package at Pinehurst Resort. There’s no better time than this summer to play the host venue of the 2024 US Open! With 9 golf courses and a tenth opening next summer, along with the Cradle short course and world-class dining and accommodations, there’s no wonder why they call Pinehurst “the cradle of American golf.”

    Zoom Broom Golf Breeze

Unless you are on a links course, it’s likely there will be trees on the course where you are playing. Trees have leaves, and leaves fall on the course. Especially in autumn, it can be frustrating to clear the line of your putt of debris, but Zoom Broom has a fix – The Golf Breeze blower. Designed to be light weight and fit in your golf bag, this surprisingly powerful blower will easily clear a path from leaves, pine needles, loose sand and other debris that may find its way into your line.

    Golf Forever

Your dad probably wants to get back in shape, he just hasn’t told you yet. Why not give him a gentle nudge by getting him the Golf Forever swing trainer and fitness package subscription? For Father’s Day you’ll even save $100 on the package. It seems to be working for Scottie Scheffler – He shot to world #1 shortly after becoming a brand ambassador. Like your dad, I’m going to get in better shape using Golf Forever’s program. I’ll start any day now…

    Takomo Golf Irons

If you haven’t heard of them before, Takomo Golf is a direct-to-consumer brand that makes irons and wedges. Really, really good irons and wedges. I have a set of the 301MB forged blades and I’m head over heels in love. After only 3 or 4 swings on the range, they went right in my bag and are there to stay. I challenge anyone to find a new set of Japanese forged irons with KBS shafts for less than $700, yet that is exactly what Takomo is doing. But it’s not just about forged blades – Takomo has a set of iron for every dad and every handicap. Give them a look. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

  • Softspikes Strike Back

    Softspikes Strike Back

I’m here to report that spiked golf shoes are making a comeback! Well, technically they never left, depending on where you play. You see, on the PGA Tour where every shot matters and one bad drive can cost you millions, spiked golf shoes are still dominant. PrideSports, makers of the Softspikes brand, reported that all four major winners this year wore Softspikes, 100 percent of the World’s Top 10 and 86% of 2022 PGA Tour winners wore replaceable spikes in their golf shoes.

I remember when the spikeless shoe revolution started. In 2010 at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai in Hawaii, Fred Couples showed up wearing casual-looking spikeless golf shoes made by Ecco, and even though he shot 21-under in three rounds and lost to Tom Watson in a playoff, all everyone wanted to talk about was his shoes. A few months later he showed up for a Monday practice round with Tiger at the 2010 Masters Tournament wearing the same shoes and lit the world on fire. The spikeless golf sneaker revolution had begun.

I admit, I was a sucker to the casual street/skater look and comfort that these new shoes offered, but the biggest attraction for me was not having to change shoes in the parking lot or locker room before playing golf. I could just wear my shoes out of the house, to the course and to the bar afterwards. In fact, I frequently wear my spikeless Puma Golf shoes to work. For years I’ve worn spikeless shoes knowing I’m sacrificing traction for comfort, but what I didn’t know was I was also giving up distance.

In a study performed by Dr. Bob Christina (Prof. of Kinesiology at the University of NC Greensboro) & Eric Alpenfels (Director of Instruction and Golf Academy at Pinehurst Resorts), they found that wearing spiked golf shoes can result in an average gain of 6 yards of carry with a driver compared to spikeless shoes. 6 yards doesn’t sound like much, but in many cases that’s enough to hit one less club into the green, or to carry that fairway bunker you always find yourself in on the corner of that one dogleg par 5.

The bottom line is, traction positively impacts performance. The pros know this. Softspikes has seen a steady uptick in usage among professionals since last year. We don’t know the percentage of amateur golfers that wear spiked shoes vs spikeless, but I suspect most amateurs are wearing spikeless shoes. For almost a decade I’ve worn spikeless shoes almost exclusively, but I’ll be switching back to spiked shoes and replacing the spikes in the few pairs I have with new Softspikes cleats.

Replacement Softspikes and CHAMP cleats can be purchased in the golf section of most large retailers, sporting goods stores, golf specialty and golf course pro shops. Cleats can also be purchased online from any of these locations, your favorite online store or directly from www.softspikes.com.

PrideSports is the undisputed leader in the golf cleat segment with its CHAMP and Softspikes brands. The company recommends golfers change their cleats every six to eight months – or even more frequently based on use – to ensure golfers get the maximum performance out of their footwear. In my experience, twice a year seems like a good interval.

CHAMP’s Helix®, Zarma Tour® and Stinger® cleats, as well as Softspikes’ Pivix®, Pulsar®, Silver Tornado and Stealth® cleats, dominate the OEM and secondary market in terms of performance and sales.
