Antigua Apparel 2010

Antiqua has been a well known and respected name in golf fashion for many years. Walk into the pro shop at your nearest golf course, and you are likely to find some Antigua shirts or accessories for sale. Antiqua also holds licenses with professional sports leagues like the NBA, MLB, Arena Football, the NHL and many colleges and Universities. In 2009 Antigua celebrated its 30th anniversary, not only in Golf, but also in the Licensed Sports, Specialty Retail and Corporate market. Antigua has also been the proud title sponsor of the Antigua Junior Tour for 20 years. With over 60 junior tournaments hosted throughout the South West, the Antigua Junior Tour provides a great avenue for junior players to compete and sharpen their games. Most recently, Antigua was named Official golf apparel licensee for the 2011 U.S. Solheim Cup Team, and will provide custom designed shirts, pants and skirts to the 12 -player U.S. Team for all seven days of the competition next year in Ireland.

I had a chance to sample a few shirts as part of Antigua’s summer & fall lineups, and I came away impressed. Most golf shirts you find these days are made using some sort of wicking material. This material is almost always some sort of polyester. This material is light and does a good job of wicking moisture, but tends to be a little scratchy or starchy to the touch, and tends to pull easily causing snags.

Antigua’s new Desert Dry Xtra-Lite Bamboo shirt is constructed of 88% Polyester and 12% Bamboo. This combination makes the shirt effective at wicking moisture and keeping the wearer dry, but also makes the shirt very soft and silky to the touch. During the 2010 FSGA Mid-Am Championship I played 36 holes on a sunny, 80 degree North Florida day wearing the shirt, and it did a very good job keeping me dry and looking good. My shirt is a dark gray color and thus moisture tends to show through the shirt, but that is normal and acceptable for a dark colored shirt. However the moisture evaporates rather quickly, further proof that the wicking properties of the shirt are working as advertised.

Given that Antigua shirts are often bought as logo merchandise at a golf pro shop or corporate logo apparel from a catalog, many people may own Antigua clothing without knowing it. A quick scan of labels in my closet revealed 2 other shirts from the Antigua group. I highly recommend the Desert Dry Extra-Lite Bamboo shirt. It’s very soft and comfortable against the skin like cotton, but still performs like polyester.

With so many styles and colors to choose from, Antigua has a shirt for just about everyone. You won’t find any crazy patterns or flashy colors, just classic designs that are as comfortable on the course as they are in the office.
