  • Mizuno JPX-800 Irons – First Look

Mizuno JPX-800 IronsMizuno Golf has long been known as a leader in forged clubs. Their forged blades have been very popular with low handicap players for many years and not many other companies can compete with the quality and feel of Mizuno irons. Recently, Mizuno has started to become a more attractive option for the mid to high handicap golfer, with the introduction of the JPX line of irons. Here’s a first look at this new game improvement club.

I’ve spent a few days hitting the JPX-800 irons and I can tell you first off that these irons are long. So far after 18 holes and some time at the range I’ve come to the conclusion that they are about half a club to a full club longer than my current irons. They are also very forgiving. The large face, wide sole and generous perimeter weighting makes these irons easy to hit, but don’t expect much work-ability as this iron was designed for the 8 to 26 handicap range. They simply want to hit the ball high and straight.

Now, let’s hear what Mizuno has to say about the clubs: “A serious looking iron designed to be amazingly forgiving and explosively long, the JPX-800™ is the first model to bring Mizuno’s Global JPX technology platform to the United States. The unbelievable distance of the JPX-800 irons is achieved by combining MAX COR Technology, Hot Metal™ Face construction, and an exotic pocket cavity to hit the maximum allowable limits for energy transfer. Hot Metal™ construction utilizes a new manufacturing process that increases the material’s natural strength to create an ultra-thin and multi-thickness face for maximum, consistent ball speed, while the innovative pocket cavity with external power bar design expands and extends the sweet area and lowers the center of gravity for unsurpassed forgiveness. An aggressive triple cut sole ensures solid ball striking from all types of lies, and a multi-material cavity badge provides tuned impact sound with enhanced feel and sharp looks. Simply put, the JPX-800 irons utilize the world’s most advanced Game Improvement technologies to help the serious mid- to high-handicap player score like never before!”

  • Bettinardi Putters – 2011 Sneak Preview!

    Bettinardi "Signature Series" Model 2
    Bettinardi "Signature Series" Model 2

In 2009, Bob Bettinardi was released from his contract with Mizuno Golf and introduced a new line of new putters as an independent once again. The creative freedom and tight manufacturing control he once again enjoys led to a fantastic new line of putters. Bettinardi putters are no only available through green-grass accounts, which means you won’t find them at your local Golfsmith, Dicks Sporting Goods or Edwin Watts. The only place to get his high quality 100% milled in the USA Putters are golf course pro shops and select club fitters and golf academies.

Bettinardi Putters have been favorites of collectors and putting enthusiasts for years. This new sales model will ensure that his putters will remain exclusive and hard to find, and a real treasure to those who purchase one. But these aren’t heirlooms to keep in a display – These putters are meant to be rolling in birdies! 2011 is going to be a fantastic year based on the limited photos I’ve seen of their new stuff, and I can’t wait to share them with you! Once the full line for 2011 is revealed (and we’ll be one of the first to give you details) you will see pictures and descriptions right here, so stay tuned!

For now, here is just a sampling of a few models that are coming for 2011. To get a closer look, click on the pictures to make them larger. If you have any questions about the putters, leave me a comment and I'll answer them for you. Enjoy!

  • Bettinardi Putter Review – And Giveaway!

    Bettinardi BB1

Here we go again kids! Last month’s Cleveland Golf CG15 Wedge Giveaway was such a success that we wanted to do another contest. Last month’s winner Steve got two brand new Cleveland CG15 wedges, so I was wondering how we could top that. We are very excited about the new Bettinardi putter line for 2010, and thanks to the fantastic folks at Bettinardi Putters, we are going to give away 2 of their beautiful new flat sticks right on time for their debut at the PGA Merchandise Show! What better way to do a contest than by having two winners? Give away something that nobody else has even seen yet!

Robert Bettinardi has been making milled putters for some of the world’s best players since the late 90s, and he quickly became known as one of the game’s finest craftsmen. He has made putters under contract for Ben Hogan Golf and more recently, Mizuno Golf. Now back on his own in his shop in Tinley Park Illinois, his new line of one-piece milled putters are designed with total creative freedom, and he’s come up with a line that will certainly turn heads, just as it did last week with my test unit on the practice green!

    Bettinardi BB1

The fine folks at Bettinardi sent me two putters to try out from the 2010 BB line – a BB1 and BB8. The BB1 is the reoccurring heel and toe cavity back design that was created by Karsten Soleheim with the original Anser putter, and has now been updated by Bettinardi by applying his trademark honeycomb face milling and one piece technology to insure accuracy and perfect combination of feel and touch. It’s not too soft and not too harsh, but just right. The ball pops off the face with a muted click. With the BB8, we see the two-tiered heel and toe weighted cavity back design being squared off for a sharper look, accompanied with the plumber’s neck for a nice combination of modern design and classic lines. The top line is visibly thinner and squared off lines make the putter appear slightly larger than it is, and in my eyes that square look makes it easier to line up. The feel is almost identical to the BB1, with the BB8 feeling a bit lighter at impact. The difference however is hardly noticeable.

    Bettinardi BB8

The new line also includes other models – the BB25 is a modern blade style with slightly tapered body and a single flange and milled flow neck. The BB26 is a center shafted heel-toe weighted design that is similar to the BB1, but with a spud style neck and slightly thicker appearance. The BB32 is the classic face balanced mallet with a pear shape and spud neck with a double bend shaft. All the putters have a single sight line and the standard Bettinardi pistol grip made by Lamkin. This grip is rather thin, and reminds me a bit of the classic pingman grip that is so popular on tour. All the putters have 3 degrees of loft and head weights of 348 grams.

You won’t find any new Bettinardi putters in your favorite retail shops like Edwin Watts, Golf Galaxy and Golfsmith. Bettinardi’s new putters are only being sold through green grass accounts – golf course pro shops and select club fitting shops. This will be sure to make them harder to find, but also serves to make them more unique. Check your local pro shop this spring for these beauties. Bettinardi also is offering the new Country Club series, which is a BB1 style in a satin nickel finish, with your club’s logo on the bottom. Clubs in the top 100 in the US will also feature a “Top 100” stamp, making the putters even more exclusive and collectible.

    Bettinardi BB8
