  • Help Us Raise Money For The Alabama Tornado Victims!

    The Alabama Tornadoes of April 27th have left behind massive destruction. They made headlines for a few days, but since then the spotlight has moved on. The CNN trucks and news crews have all but left, yet the devastation remains. The Red Cross, community churches, local charities and community leaders were quick to come to the aid of others, but the damage is something that these communities will be dealing with for months and years to come. Imagine coming home to see a concrete slab where your house used to be, and all your personal belongings blown away with it… That’s what countless families are dealing with right now as the heat of summer approaches.

    I believe that it’s now time to make a difference. To that end, we are reaching out to our readers and golf industry contacts, and intothegrain.com is hitting the road to play in a golf marathon organized to help with the recovery. I’ve been fortunate to be able to write about golf at intothegrain.com and have fun doing it, and now I’m proud that I can use my position as a golf blogger to help others through this wonderful game. Through our partners at Back 9 Promotions,  Oak Mountain Church and the Christian Mission Services, we’ll make sure the funds go directly to the families right there in need of services.

    100% of the funds we raise will be distributed to communities, families and relief workers to sustain them during rebuilding. The Golf-A-Thon will be held at a top-rated golf facility called Limestone Springs in Oneonta, Alabama on June 20, 2011 with the goal of playing up to 100 holes in one day. I’m asking for pledges and donations in an effort to reach my goal of raising $1500. These pledges can be as simple as $1 per hole played, or any flat amount you or your company wish to contribute.   • Wyatt Shoots 57 At Alabama Junior

    Bobby Wyatt shot a 57 on Wednesday in the AGA State Boys Junior Championship at the Country Club of Mobile.

    17 year old Bobby Wyatt of Mobile Alabama just one upped everybody this week. In the second round of the Alabama Boys State Junior Championship at the 6638 yard Country Club of Mobile, Wyatt shot a 14 under 57! Just for the record, that’s two shots better than Paul Goydos’ recent 59 at the John Deere Classic, and one shot better than Ryo Ishikawa’s 58 on the Japan PGA Tour earlier this year. Sure, Wyatt isn’t a pro. Hell, he’s barely old enough to drive, but no matter where you are or what course you are playing, shooting 57 is no small feat.

    Wyatt made 12 birdies and an eagle on the par 71 layout, where his family have been members since Bobby was a little kid. His front-nine 26 included seven birdies and an eagle. He birdied #10 and #11 to get to 11 under through 11 holes, and closed with birdies on #13, #16 and #17 before leaving his birdie putt hanging on the lip on 18 for a 56.

    “It was the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen with my own two eyes,” said Trey Mullinax, who played alongside Wyatt. “It was the smoothest swing I’ve seen from Bobby in a long time, and I’ve known him for a very long time.”

    “I’ve played (the Country Club of Mobile) at least a thousand times,” Wyatt said. “I was hitting the shots I’ve hit all my life. It really allowed me to just play shot by shot.”

    Wyatt and Mullinax will be moving into an apartment at the University of Alabama on Aug. 13 to start their freshman year with the Crimson Tide.

    It’s possible Wyatt’s score set a world record as the lowest score in competitive play on a golf course of more than 6,500 yards, which the Guinness Book of World Records uses as the standard. The course as played by Wyatt today measured 6,643 yards.

    The Guinness Book has recognized a pair of 58s, posted by Jason Bohn in the final round to win the Canadian Tour’s Bayer Championship, and by Shigeki Maruyama who posted the round in a U.S. Open sectional qualifier.
