Cleveland CG7 & CG7 Tour Black Pearl Irons

CG7_5_iron_black-pearl_hero_cropCleveland and it’s parent company Srixon Golf have been in the news (at least on this website) a lot lately. Srixon is introducing a new line of clubs that will ship in October, and from the looks of them they will do well. Click HERE to see them. The Srixon line, dubbed Z-TX, have already done very well in Japan, and now will be available for the US market. I currently play with the Srixon i701 Tour irons which have been around for a while, so I’m excited to see the new offerings. Srixon should see an increased market share in the US, with the growing use of it’s Z-Star golf balls on the professional tours garnering more attention among consumers.

The latest offering from Cleveland Golf is the new CG7 and CG7 Tour Black Pearl irons. Available in November, these irons are essentially the same as the original CG7 and CG7 Tour, except for the black pearl finish that Cleveland has made famous in it’s wedges and CG1 irons. What does this mean? Well, it means they’ve taken a nice looking club and made them gorgeous. We don’t have many details on these, but we know that the CG7 will retail for $699, and the CG7 Tour will go for $799. They also appear to sport Cleveland’s new Laser Etched grooves, which will be available on the new CG15 wedges also. Both sets also qualify for Cleveland’s Free Irons Promotion. If you purchase a set of Cleveland Irons, you will be eligible to trade in your set for any of the new models of equal or lesser value introduced from January 2010 to December 2011 at no charge. All you have to do is buy your set at an authorized Cleveland Golf dealer and register your purchase on their website.

The only question mark for me is, although the black pearl finish is gorgeous, black pearl finished clubs are notorious for their lack of bendability. I had a set of the old TA3 irons with the black finish, and my club maker insisted he could bend them. He did indeed bend them. One broke in the bending machine, and two others broke shortly after on the range, leaving me with three shafts with nothing but a hosel attached and a lack of faith in Cleveland Clubs. The bottom line is, if you get them custom fit from Cleveland you’ll be fine. Just stay away from having someone bend them after the fact. Thanks for visiting!

I wouldn’t blame Cleveland Golf for your “clubmakers” lack of knowledge for which clubs can be bent and how far and which clubs shouldn’t be bent.

I wasn’t trying to blame Cleveland for anything, but I guess it comes across that way… I contacted Cleveland Golf about that very issue for my review of the CG15 wedges, and I was informed that the Black Pearl finish for the CG15s is just a treatment, and shouldn’t affect the bendability at all. The older model irons I had that broke were made using a different manufacturing process that rendered the metal more brittle, making them susceptible to breaking. I think it’s also important to note that Cleveland also included a yellow sticker on the shaft that warned against bending the clubs. Both my clubmaker and I accepted that risk, and I did not attempt to send the clubs back to have replaced as a result. Lesson learned!

  • Will the CG7 Black Pearl Tour irons conform to the 2010 USGA rules?

  • John Duval

The CG7 Black Pearl irons have the same “Zip” grooves that the new CG15 Wedges have. These are compliant with USGA rules for 2010 for the vast majority of golfers. If you are playing in high level USGA Amateur or US Open Qualifiers or are on the PGA Tour, these will not be legal according to the new condition of competition for those events and you need to get clubs with the modified grooves. For more info on the groove rule change, see my article here: http://www.intothegrain.com/about-the-usga-groove-rule-change/

    G’day Gentlemen
I reckon the Clevelands are very under rated and have been gobbled up by Srixon and made to look like a 2nd string club. It is a pity. I have CG Golds and their forgiving and hit beautifully.
    All that aside…………..
I need your help in trying to find a CG Gold 2 iron. I have tried a few shops and Cleveland themselves without success.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.
By the way, I live in Australia and am happy to pay freight from anywhere in the world.
    Thanks in advance.

    Ichlis,

SRI Sports bought Cleveland, but they are still very independent and will actually have a stronger year this year I believe. Srixon will not absorb them and make their clubs second string. I think they have a very solid line this year, even better than Srixon probably!

I’ve reached out to my contact in high places at Cleveland Golf to track down a CG Gold 2 iron for you. I’ll email you when I hear back. Cheers!

  • Great article…I’m a HUGE fan of Cleveland clubs and wouldn’t think of playing a round with any other brand

I had the priveledge to hit these clubs and I must say the rsults were better than expected. They had a very clean look at set up and a solid, firm feel on contact. My only concern would be the durability of the micro grooves. Although they bit like a pitbull, the grooves were a pain to clean for the next shot. I would definately be satisfied to have these clubs as my next set of weapons without a doubt.
